Over the years, I’ve lived with my upper back and neck feeling tired and tight and my own efforts to change my posture never helped. In more recent years, I found myself in a lot of pain from TMJ and fibromyalgia. I feel using Posture Release Imagery and the Alexander Technique plays a significant role in helping me lessen pain and tired, tight muscles. When I got to the car after my first lesson, I said to myself, “Wow! I can breathe so much easier!” Through using Posture Release Imagery and the Alexander Technique, I have undone and continue to undo so many habits of unnecessary tension. Using these techniques has also helped me become more aware of and change patterns of thinking that contribute to habits of tension.
Other forms of help have benefited me greatly but I either have to wait until I have a block of time to do other kinds of self-help or wait until the next doctor or therapist appointment for help. My favorite thing about Posture Release Imagery and the Alexander Technique is that I can use them to reduce tension and lessen pain in every activity I do.
I would highly recommend getting lessons in the Alexander Technique and learning Posture Release Imagery from John Appleton. He is an excellent teacher. Although a person can gain benefits from reading his information and trying his exercises, one can understand and gain so much more at a lesson by experiencing a hands-on AT lesson and learning from John’s direct instructions. . . . I took classes with John and I was amazed at the way my body changed. I have the worst posture of anybody I know, other than eighty year old women with scoliosis. Within the first session, I could see my shape transforming in a way I’d never thought possible. The visualization techniques helped me see myself differently than I had, and have helped me change the way I think about posture and pain. It’s amazing how, with small manipulations, you feel a big change in your body. I had always thought about posture as straining myself, and after my time wiTH John, when I stood up straight, it started feeling like slipping into the right groove. I feel blessed to have been in his class.
3. Hi John,A friend of mine, who is both an Alexander teacher and a Feldenkrais practitioner, recently recommended your work to me. I’m happy to say that the posture release imagery on your wonderful and generous website has opened a new world for me. A friend of mine and I have just started working together on the exercises on your website (we are both Feldenkrais practitioners), and we hope to eventually use some of your exercises to teach a class at our Senior Center here in NYC. On my own, I’ve been experimenting with your exercises for about three weeks now, and I have welcomed a great change in my posture and in my balance. I feel much more stable, and I can walk at least twice as far without getting tired.Merry, NYC

Dear Mr. John Appleton, I would like to say a very big thank you, for sharing your unique approach to posture release!I’m a beginner, but the ‘lamb’ already had a strong effect on me. Among other things, I noticed a great release for my hand RSI (mouse-sickness) when applying it.
The feeling also reminded me of the way a threatened hedgehog rolls into a ball (they are very common around here). So now I like to start my day imagining being a hedgehog, rolling into a ball, protruding my pins maximally in all directions from my ‘dorsal surfaces’. (Might act more like a stretch than a ‘release’, but feels great afterwards.)
Again, thanks a lot, and keep up the good work! I will continue my study of your writings until I can reap similar benefits from your more advanced exercises.
